Antique signed William Ney coverlet. This is an incredible piece of American history. Although it is not dated, we know he lived 1811-1892. He was one of the first Pennsylvania weavers to use a Jacquard mechanism on his loom enabling more intricate designs. His work is found in museums such as the Henry Ford Museum and others.
Coverlets were an important accessory to the home. They were popular in the 1600s to the 1800s. Coverlets eventually were phased out as bed coverings due to cost and replaced with a less expensive to make covering, the quilt.
Please see all photos for details. This coverlet is in good condition with a few small age spots. The reverse wording was important to weavers so it could be read on both sides. The reverse is almost as beautiful as the front!
