This antique covelet is signed and dated by weaver, John Kaufman. It is in very good condition for its age. The Kaufman coverlet is just an incredible piece of American history. It does have some staining and fringe loss. Please see all photos for details. It is a wonderful example of American weaving craftsmanship. There is a seam down the middle as was typical for pre-civil war pieces. The weavers also put wording in reverse so that one could read the words from both sides.
John Kaufman was a Mennonite Pennsylvania weaver (1812-1863). It is believed that he made over 400 coverlets with approximately 50 or less still around today. Some of his coverlets are featured in museums such as The Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
