Antique 1839 dated but unsigned hand woven covelet. Newark, Ohio made as seen in the coverlet design. This coverlet is reversible and is just as beautiful on the reverse side. It is made to be read on both sides, as was typical for weavers to create this intricacy in their coverlets. It is a deep indigo and ivory with some damage due to wear and age. Please see all photos for details. This is an incredible piece with such attention to the design. A true work of American textile craftsmanship to own!
Coverlets pre-dated quilts and were used as bedcoverings. They were popular from the 1600s to the 1800s. Looms were not large enough to accomodate such pieces, so they made them in two separate weavings and stitched them together with a seam down the middle. This coverlet was made in that method as two pieces sewn together.
